MEET THE ARTIST
NADIA HERNANDEZ
Nadia Hernández’s multi disciplinary practice reflects a process of bearing witness to the loss of home and the symbolic power of memory and memorialisation.
Informed by her experience as a Venezuelan woman living in Australia, and positioning herself both within and outside the Venezuelan diaspora, Hernández makes art as a means to connect with a sense of place that exists beyond psychic and geographic boundaries.
Nadia opened her studio doors, and brought us into her world...
"Every painter is good news, because every painter is one less soldier."
I’ve always been interested in a lot of things—like fashion, poetry, music, and magazines. I really enjoy all forms of creative expression, and I think it’s nice not feeling the need to define yourself by just one thing. I used to write a lot of poetry—though not as much anymore—but text still plays a big role in my work.
One of the main works used for the collection comes from a series I created about my great-grandmother. The process involved listening to recordings my family members had sent me. I worked with collage—not just in the physical sense of cutting and assembling paper, but also in weaving together their stories and memories.
