climate

The fashion industry presents many environmental challenges in it’s operations, including materials, design, production, and shipping. We’ve taken foundational actions to decrease our carbon footprint – the next step is working with a carbon auditor to identify other improvements we can make. Beyond reducing our environmental impact we have also invested in reforestation and carbon preventative programs.

Climate

Impact Snapshot

  • Alémais has planted over a half a million trees, over 600,000 and counting trees with our partner Ecologi.

  • 1,033t CO2e emissions have been prevented through 46 verified carbon avoidance projects.

  • In 2022, Alémais established a Repair Program to extend the life of all Alémais products.

Reforestation Project

We recognise that we are accountable to the health and wellbeing of our wonderful planet Earth, which is why we plant a tree for every garment sold amongst other marketing initiatives.

Alémais has funded the planting of over half a million trees (600,000) and counting since the brand’s inception. This includes 265,000 trees in Kenya, 200,000 trees in Madagascar and other projects across Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda, Argentina, Tanzania, Morocco, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru and Nicaragua.

Ecologi

Ecologi is a platform enabling businesses to take climate action by funding tree planting projects and carbon-offsetting initiatives worldwide.  One of the regeneration projects we supported through Ecologi, is in the Mau Forest of Southern Kenya, which provides local communities with steady employment, helping them achieve better access to education, nutrition, and healthcare. In turn, the restoration of the forest ecosystem supports improved water availability and agricultural productivity.

Wholesale and Freight

Despite the challenges faced by the industry we’re in, Alémais has taken steps to reduce the use of airfreight by establishing warehouses in the Netherlands (2023), Hong Kong (2022), the United States (2022) and Australia (2021).

Our multi-warehouse approach has allowed us to minimise and limit the movement of goods, by avoiding the shipping of all goods to Australia before final distribution to our clients in 60 countries.

In 2023, we were able to avoid 3.588 billion kilograms/ kilometres (Kg/Km) in air freight by reducing the amount of movement of our goods between our suppliers and wholesale customers.

Climate-positive workforce

Australia has one of the largest carbon footprints per capita. Alémais funds certified carbon avoidance projects that offset each of our team member’s individual footprint, plus an extra 10% for climate positivity.

We have prevented 1,033t CO₂e rom emission through 46 carbon avoidance projects, equivalent to the annual electricity usage of approximately 413 households.

Chemicals

The clothing industry uses more than 7,000 synthetic dyes and inks during production. [1] These chemicals can leach into our waterways, impacting the health and biodiversity of our rivers and oceans, and potentially contaminating drinking water for downstream communities. By working with responsible facilities that recycle and reuse most of their wastewater and effluents, and by prioritising waterless printing techniques we are reducing our impact.

  • 100% of our printing is digital, which uses far less water, waste, and chemicals than screen-printing and other conventional techniques.

  • 100% of our dye facilities are OEKO- CERTIFIED standard 100. This means they have been tested for known harmful chemicals for human health.

  • 100% of our dyes and inks are free from harmful plastic and toxic PFOAs.

memberships and organisations

Textile Exchange

We are a member of the Textile Exchange, a global non-profit organisation dedicated to accelerating sustainability in the textile industry. We’ve pledged goals for their 2025 Sustainable Cotton Challenge and 2025 Sustainable Synthetic Challenge.

Canopy

Canopy is a non-profit environmental organisation dedicated to protecting the world's forests, species, and climate by transforming unsustainable wood pulp supply chains. We are a brand partner, and use their resources to accelerate our efforts.

Upparel

Upparel is a pioneering textile recovery and recycling company. Since partnering with them in 2023, our impact has amounted to: 1613kg greenhouse gases prevented (equal to the carbon sequestered, or captured by 27 square metres of forest in a year); plus 461kg of textiles and hardware diverted from landfill (comparable to saving 1,200 T-shirts from going to waste).
